Thanks Sally Field

What kind of love has a man if he gives nothing up for it?

Does Sally want to compare love that requires nothing in return, to sacrifical love. Love may involve sacrafice, but not require it.

I think she does. Sally's character discovered that her recently deceased husband had a 20-year affair. In this scene, she laments the day she discovered the affair, some fifteen years ago. Her husband swore he would end it, but she knows now he never did. Sally loved her husband dearly, but feels betrayed and like he wasn't the man she thought he was.

The love she had for her husband gave up things: freedom, honor, time, sacrifice. Although Sally's husband loved her, it wasn't so devoted that it would give up something for her sake.

"no greater love has a man than this- that he would lay down his life for his friends."

and while it's not exactly the same, i even take King David's approach when he wanted to buy a piece of land to offer a sacrifice and the man offered it to him for free- "I will not sacrifice that which cost me nothing"

just random thoughts spurred to mind by the quote
